I dont need biggest in the World...

As I have aged,I realize you can get pleasure from quality over the giant size. A small yard where you fuss over little jewel plants can satisfy (I THINK!) as much as a back forty and you need a baler!
My inspiration has to be the San Francisco Conservatory of flowers. A large-but not huge by public standards- ornate Victorian Greenhouse. A tall center “room” with two wings ending in end rooms. The center has the 120 year old Philidendrons and Cycads..but the rest of the greenhouse is pretty much beautiful potted plants or a cool high cloudforest section with Orchids and mosses of a dripping wet mountain. Nothing huge. The end rooms are 50% empty but paths and ponds or art work. Negative space to offset the packed to the gills.

That’s what I’m going for with my small property. A greenhouse with no roof. I have tree’s..but all around are many plants that I prune hard. I dont need a giant Schefflera..I do need one pruned to fit and that’s good enough for me.
Same for the outdoors botanical Sherman Gardens in soucal. Other then a few large plants..its mostly what you need to get close too admire.
So,that’s how I see why I might have a hundred different plants covering an area of what one tree in the usual suburban lawn does. My Driveway and home and cement floors are the negative space..you still need that.
Yet,I’m always adding.. ha.

I agree with Ladybug, photos please. The size of your garden isn't important, it's the passion you put into it that matters and working with nature.

Cloudy with some very light rain today..shocking. Photos of the shady backyard . Its about 20' X 30' long. Hard to see the smaller plants with GOY resolution.
Any questions of whats what..fee free to ask.

A clear case of quality over quantity - it looks much bigger than 20x30'

Thank you. The more I crowd..it seems to improve the humidity and that helps the tropical flora. Also, with the over head plants...that drip water to below,so no waste there.

You are so right Stan. What got me into gardening in the first place was a visit to the Dupont family's Longwood Gardens in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania. After exploring most of the spectacular gardens on its 1077 acres...took me a few days...do you know what impressed me the most? It was their small garden exhibit. Tiny it was but it held so many surprises and interesting features long its little winding path that it left an indelible impression on me. So over the years my effort has been to duplicate the look and especially the feeling of that exhibit.

Thanks for the photos Stan. You've certainly made the best of every bit of space. Some great, creative planting.
