SFG... we have lift off

Planted 1 square of Garlic plus 2 squares of Red onion plants today. Also 2 squares each of Parsnip, Carrot and Leek seeds. The middle squares of each type of seed are planted in vermiculite to see if it makes any difference to the speed they germinate. Keeping the fleece over them overnight just in case but hasnt gone below 5 degrees for ages…fingers crossed.

This I am thinking of as my winter vegetable box as I can sort of leave it to fend for itself mainly and then harvest whilst leaving them in the ground undisturbed.

I am also trying companion planting this year, apparently planting the onions next to carrots is supposed to keep away the carrot fly, so time will tell, with the added pressure from leeks and garlic the flies stand no chance …right !!

By the way in case your wondering what the brown squares are, I’m trying out some 2" plastic mesh just under the surface to try and stop my cats digging in my beds… I heard chicken wire worked, but it was too expensive and this way I can leave the mesh down and the plants can grow right through them, well thats the plan. Also made planting seeds pretty easy lol.
Lots of experimenting this year :)

Sow some more Early Nantes seed at the beginning of June. You wont get Carrot Fly then. Crop will mature in October.

Ooh thanks for the tip Diane i certainly will be sowing more, probably in between the salad stuff in my other box.

It's all about experimenting Hywel lol, I am doing a lot of reading up on this and winging a lot of it...didnt do too bad last year but the pests did get the better of me by the end of the season.
Hoping to keep on top of them this year and not give them chance to establish !
