Winter CAN be interesting! part 3

OK – I give in! The ‘mystery’ seed head in part 2 was too easy – Amy and Sbg guessed it – so well done!

This was it -

Ceratostigma willmottianum

And here’s the flowers, only a few weeks ago -

Well – you certainly need more of a challenge, don’t you! So, I am not going to name the seedheads this time – I shall number them, and then give you photos of the flowers with letters for each. You can have a go at matching them all up – and naming them, of course. See how you get on! Good luck…

seedhead 1

seedhead 2

seedhead 3

seedhead 4

seedhead 5

seedhead 6

And now the flowers – in no particular order! (Now where have I heard that before??)

flower a

flower b

flower c

flower d

flower e

flower f

How are you doing with the matching up? Easy? How about the names, though…..??

I’ll tell you tomorrow which ones go together – and if anyone has got the right answers! No conferring…lol.

To end with – here’s the ‘mystery’ seed head – have you any idea what this might be?

Have fun!

uma
Uma

1-b Agastache anisata (but think that 1 is Agastache rugosa and b is Agastache anisata. They are different - seed heads and flowers.) The second idea as for this Nepeta subsessilis most probably...
2-d Alchemilla mollis (vulgaris?)
3-e Chelone lyonii
4-f Clematis tangutica (Helios, Radar Love)
5-a Echinacea purpurea Alba (White Swan)
6-c Penstemon x mexicale (Sunburst Ruby?)

26 Nov, 2009

Uma

"Mystery" is very similar to my Nigella sativa. Think it is.

26 Nov, 2009

A5 Echinacea White Swan
B1 Agastache
c6 Penstemon
D2 Alchemilla mollis
E3 Chelone
F4 Clematis tangutica

can't pin the mystery one down though

27 Nov, 2009

Uma - great work, there - almost right! Alternatives, too - I'm not saying which is correct yet, though. :-)) I shall post the answers this afternoon.

Grindle - also really good - shame about the mystery one, though.

27 Nov, 2009

I agree with Uma - as she seems to be closest, lol. I can't get past Aquilegia for the mystery - I am stumped, love the pictures though.

27 Nov, 2009

It is a difficult one, that mystery seedhead, Wagger. I don't think that many people grow it, or if they do, maybe they don't realise! See part 4 - all is revealed!

27 Nov, 2009

Loved this blog Spritz, it reminds me of the plant I-dents the trainees/students get here at Kew! I confess I only got just over half of them right.Could do better!

28 Nov, 2009

Oooops! Glad you approve, though. I feel honoured that I thought this series up, now - I'm in good company. :-))

28 Nov, 2009

Not as bad as conifer cutting idents, though - they were really a nightmare, I hated that part of my training.

28 Nov, 2009

I couldn't even BEGIN to recognise conifers, Bamboo! I have every admiration for those of you who have gone through the training and come out the other side! :-)))

28 Nov, 2009

Fortunately, did really well in some areas - made up for the "I'm hopeless at this" ones...

28 Nov, 2009

:-)))

28 Nov, 2009

yes i think that would be me too. i'd love to do the rhs qualifications.
agree about the conifers spritz, unless its larch or yew :o)

28 Nov, 2009

I just don't look at many conifers that close! I could recognise those two and Scots Pine, possibly, I think.

28 Nov, 2009

I've got a bit better, but I tell you, when you see trays and trays of tiny, tiny conifer cuttings - nightmare, I only recognised two, and then only because of their colour, really. that left hundreds unrecognised - by me, anyway!

29 Nov, 2009

I bet Bluespruce would be a whizz at that, Bamboo! :-))))) What do you reckon - 100%?? lol.

29 Nov, 2009

Yep, for sure - I reckon its a specialism all on its own

29 Nov, 2009

He's so interested in conifers! His knowledge is amazing....but I suppose anyone who specialises in one area becomes an 'expert'. Great to have them on the site, though, isn't it! What a fund of knowledge we have on GOY.

29 Nov, 2009

Having the knowledge available is good, yes - conifers, any conifers, aren't one of my favourite plants, I'm afraid. Though he has posted pics of a couple that took my eye, I must admit, so I may yet be converted to a degree, lol

29 Nov, 2009

Oh yes, I agree - and also that dwarf Ginkgo biloba he has - Oooohh!!! I'd love one!

29 Nov, 2009

I've got a Gingko, but its only dwarf because its so slow growing - I'll be long gone before it gets to 12 feet, probably!

29 Nov, 2009

LOL. Are they really, really slow growing? I don't want a tree-sized one.

I shall have to take another look at BS's one - and make a note of its name! He'll know where he got it from. :-))

29 Nov, 2009

Really slow growing - and there's a variegated leaf one that I'd dearly love to have too.

29 Nov, 2009

Don't, please - I haven't got room!!!!! I didn't know about the variegated leaved one. How lovely!
