Through Henry's eyes....

Henry thinks that my garden belongs to him. He goes out every morning and walks purposefully all round it, to make sure that all is well.

I wonder what he thought when he saw me creating a new island bed in mid-June?

This was the area of lawn before I started.

And here’s the bed after I’d planted it up.

Eight weeks on, and it looks like this…to me.

But what does he see when he walks round it? I’ll show you.

Heuchera ‘Palace Purple’ and Corydalis ochraleuca…

There’s a Persicaria ‘Red Dragon’…and Anthemis ‘Sauce Hollandaise’

More ‘Sauce Hollandaise’ and Persicaria flowers – with Artemisia ‘Oriental Limelight’

If he looks up a bit, he’ll see that one of the two Clematis on the obelisk is flowering well – C. viticella ‘Alba Luxurians’ The rose has put on plenty of new growth, too. It’s called ‘Lady Hillingdon’.

Further along, there’s a white Gaura lindheimeri with Coreopsis ‘Jive’.

At the far end of the bed is a white Gerbera ‘Everlast’

And two dwarf Leucanthemum.

The roses (Rosa ‘Champagne Moment’) have finished their first flush of blooms, but they both have plenty of new buds.

This is what I see – but maybe it’s better to look more closely, and see the flowers growing happily in the new bed from lower down – What do you think, Henry?

He definitely prefers the lawn to roll on!

As long as you dont interfere with his walking area and obviously a nice patch to have a roll around when needed, I think you` ve still got a happy Henry. It looks lovely Spritz, and has really filled out,.........

Do you think Henry really knows all those long names Barbara and how are the knees after crawling round the garden, camera in hand!! The island bed is looking fabulous even though Henry may not appreciate it in the same way as us.
Lovely blog and great photos.

Lovely blog - I think Henry is just lucky to have a great owner and a great garden to roll around in! Lovely photos!

20 Aug, 2009

I have been staying with my sister-in-law and her dog does an "evening patrol" every night. I wonder what he can see that we cann't. Sometimes it is quite a job to get him in.

20 Aug, 2009

Thanks for the lovely comments! Yes, it has filled out - too much in some places! I shall have to cut back some of the plants which have expanded too far. The Persicaria loves it there - I planted 7 of them, and that was too many. Never mind, we learn by experience, don't we!

Henry DOES sniff flowers - I've watched him. He hasn't once tried to run across the new bed...good boy! :-) There's plenty more grass for him to roll on!

i just adore henry B, hes such a sweetie, wish he could come live with me, lol, i bet he loves all the lovely flowers, im convinced our pets like to see a nice garden,, angelina does

Brill blog and photos, and your island looks great and Henry is fab.

20 Aug, 2009

How on earth did you manage to take those lovely photos down an Henry's level? Did you not have a wet nose pushing in under your elbow the whole time? He may stay out of your new bed but I'm surprised you didn't finish up in there nose first, lol.

20 Aug, 2009

You're right - he is nosey! He likes to know exactly what I'm doing, and if I prune something - he grabs a piece, drags it off and does some 'pruning' of his own! Guess who has to clear it up, though!

More often, his ball gets dropped in front of me and an eager wet nose prods me! After all, that MUST be what I'm in the garden for, mustn't it? lol.

20 Aug, 2009

That makes sense to me, Henry!

20 Aug, 2009

Fantastic Spritz . the newly created island looks as though it,s always been there , I have a feeling that Henry is use to things moving about and changing , I can just imagine him thinking " what has she done now , I,ll have to go the other way round again " :o)

20 Aug, 2009

Just had another looksee Spritz & your plants look so healthy & flourishing. A real pleasure to wander thru' with Henry.

20 Aug, 2009

Are you teasing me, with those fab colour combos of dark and creamy white?

Yes, I agree, Amy! Has this really been in existence for only 8 weeks or so? Fabulous!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

PS Henry is as handsome as ever!

20 Aug, 2009

My colour scheme is cream, white, burgundy and lime green, David - so no - I'm not teasing you!

Thanks, all of you...I appreciate your kind comments...so does Henry!

20 Aug, 2009

Oh, yes, you are! Lovely!!!!!!!!! :-)

And a wee "Woof!" to lovely Henry!

Looks great Barbara - didn't the Persicaria do well! I remember when you first got it. It seems to go well with so many other plants. I'm really pleased with mine too.

Big ear-rub for Henry :-)

21 Aug, 2009

He'll ask for more when I stop, Sarah! lol.

Yes, I planted Persicaria in this bed after I'd seen how lovely it looked in the other flowerbed. It has gone a bit mad here - and weaves through the other plants, but I still like it a lot!

It seems to be well behaved enough - I thought mine had wandered becuase the long stems were appearing through other plants, but I traced them back and it hadn't spread from where I'd planted it.

21 Aug, 2009

Yes, you're right - they've just got very long stems! :-))

21 Aug, 2009

Excellent blog Spritz. I really enjoyed things from Henry's point of view and of course yours. The bed is just wonderful.

21 Aug, 2009

Thank you...:-)

22 Aug, 2009

What a lovely border, with such a stunning colour scheme..I am inspired!! Nice to see it from the hounds point of view..I always wonder what Dar makes of my work...not that he ever lets me do anything without "supervision"!! He and Henry are obviously from the same school of thought!!

22 Aug, 2009

I know my place in the hierarchy, Maranddar - it's Henry's garden....I just look after it for him! lol.

22 Aug, 2009

I can just see you crawling around that bed, taking "Dog's Eye View" pics!! LMAO!! Great blog!
What's the white & burgundy flower? Is that the clematis? It's superb!

23 Aug, 2009

Your new bed's really come along great in the short time it's been there and thanks for the Henry's Eye View pics.

23 Aug, 2009

No - that's Coreopsis 'Jive', Madperth. I'm not sure if it will turn out to be hardy, yet. I am always crawling round on hands and knees - it's much easier to see the weeds before they get big! lol.

You're welcome, Keithsmum! :-)

23 Aug, 2009

Lol! I'll wait til I know if it's hardy before adding it to my wishlist!!!!!!!
You sure you havent been at Oddbillie's pints???? LOL!

23 Aug, 2009

LOL. I've worn a hole in the knees of my jeans!!

23 Aug, 2009

I do that too!!

23 Aug, 2009

I suppose I could pretend they were 'designer' jeans, but I don't think anyone in the village would believe me. It's just not that kind of place!! LOL.

23 Aug, 2009

LMAO!!!!!!!

23 Aug, 2009

Tell Henry he has a brilliant eye for colour. lovely pictures and a smashing garden.

23 Aug, 2009

I sure will! He loves 'his' garden! Funnily enough, so do I! lol. Thanks, Rbtkew.

23 Aug, 2009

what an achievement, the stroll round this island was quite stunning, I wonder if Henry realizes how lucky he is to be able to wonder around such complementry planting every day.

23 Aug, 2009

It is amazing how your island bed looks as if it has always been there, well done to you, your hard work paid off.
I am sure Henry thinks your wonderful, most labs worship their owners and Vice-versa.

24 Aug, 2009

Great blog Spritz....the new flower bed is gorgeous...I have my eye on the lovely Coreopsis 'jive'...its a beauty..like everything in your garden...including Henry.....:>)

24 Aug, 2009

Thanks, Dd and Motinot! Yes, Henry is a wonderful dog - very loving. i often get a 'kiss' when I'm weeding!

I am really hoping that 'Jive' will survive the winter...

25 Aug, 2009

lovely blog and beautiful island planting - I have a large standard poodle boy who is terrified of 1 particular fish (a large ghost carp) in my pond. When I feed the fish or when he walks past the pond he is obsessed with ''finding Casper' - he goes around and around until he sees him, then he either barks or just seems content to know where he is! I'm not sure where else he thinks Casper could be........

26 Aug, 2009

Thanks.

Dogs can get strange things into their heads, can't they!

Being a Labrador, Henry would be straight in the pond with Casper! It would be the fish who were terrified! LOL.

26 Aug, 2009

What a brilliant blog, excellent pics and a garden to inspire.
My black Lab would certainly enjoy a swim with 'Henry'.
Is his name Henry?

26 Aug, 2009

It certainly is! Yours would enjoy splashing around with Henry in our stream, I suspect!

Thank you for the lovely comments, Tricia!

26 Aug, 2009

Thanks for the tour - what lovely planting. I do like a lot of white flowers. Appreciate all the plant names too, although some won't grow here. But it does help when I go to the nursery to buy seedlings.

1 Sep, 2009

Shame - some would, though, I'm sure! It's certainly worth checking, if there's something you really like. :-))

Thanks for the lovely comment!

Lovely blog Spritz. The new patch and planting looks lovely with the obelisk reaching for the sky in the middle !
And Henry .... what can I say but ... 'You're gorgeous !!'

4 Sep, 2009

Henry says 'Thank you' - and so do I! :-)

5 Sep, 2009

The pleasure is all mine ! :))
