Six weeks later...

Well, doesn’t time fly! It’s six weeks since I told you about planting up the bank where the Juniper died.

This is what it looked like then -

Too many gaps for my liking! I had realised that it would look a bit bare in the winter, so I added some Heucheras, as I told you. This one only went in today – it’s called ‘Root Beer’ and it has amber flowers – perfect colouring.

I also planted some Salvias – ‘Caradonna’ is a tall one, with black stems and purple flowers. They’ve not only filled gaps, but they’ve picked up the colour of the Clematis at the bottom of the bank, which has thoughtfully started to produce some more flowers.

The Salvias are still flowering, and have a while to go yet.

The Rudbeckias I planted to go with Rosa ‘Hot Chocolate’ have been flowering their socks off since they went in. New buds are appearing all the time.

The roses have been a real pleasure – they’ve all continued to flower, and there are plenty more buds on them, as well.

This is ‘Hot Chocolate’ with the Rudbeckias.

The whole area has filled out – and I’m really pleased with it. It’s just how I visualised it.

I can recommend the Helenium – ’Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ – as you can see, it’s still flowering. I’ve been dead-heading it, but it also has buds still to open.

I’m not missing the Juniper at all – just enjoying all the flowers!

Gosh Spritz I can understand your pleasure, its really doing well and looks a treat, you certainly have an eye for what goes together, well done....

16 Sep, 2011

Very nice Spritz. Those heuchera certainly brighten up the front of that border.

So glad you aren't missing the juniper - it was such a shock losing it. The new border is beautiful, and hasn't it settled in quickly! Its wonderful that it is just as you visualised it - I do envy people who can visualise what they want - I have to try it and see if its right and then move everything round again, which I've been trying to make a start on this afternoon. Isn't that Hot Chocolate amazing?

This looks wonderful, Spritz! And I can see why you wanted to plant a row of Lavender as well...It looked good before, but it is looking fabulous now my friend!!!!

Great blog Spritz....it all looks great!

16 Sep, 2011

Wasn't that just the cloud with a silver lining!! Spritz, that's so beautiful, and so quick in filling out. It's great that you have realised your vision, and it's all come together fantastically well! Can I ask, do you know the name of your pretty Rudbeckia? I have just ordered seed of Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer', so I'm looking forward to getting those!

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments. I really enjoyed deciding on a colour scheme and putting all the plants together. In an established garden, you don't often get an opportunity like that! It's a shame that something special died to create the space, but at the moment, I can't honestly say I'm sorry. :-/

Libet, the Rudbeckias were just called 'Autumn Shades' but I suspect they 're R. hirta with a name, so they probably won't be hardy. I'll be looking for seeds, too!

You've managed to create a lovely colourful garden on the bank of a stream...quite an achievement! Isn't Hot Chocolate special? I am so glad I got one.

17 Sep, 2011

Just doubled up my comment, no idea how that happened!

Lovely planting, I do like that new Heucheras fabulous colour and what a pity the Rudbeckia isnt hardy its a beauty!

17 Sep, 2011

Yes, Pp. A great pity - but I'll do my best to grow some more of them, as they're exactly the right colour. I'm pleased with the new Heuchera.

Karen - yes, it's a wonderful rose! :-)

17 Sep, 2011

That is so pretty. Your colours and textures are brilliant.

18 Sep, 2011

That bank looks great, I really like Rudbeckia in all its variations and the foliage colour with the Heuchera is lovely.

18 Sep, 2011

Thanks. :-))

18 Sep, 2011

So much more interest now, and a wonderful colour combo, just love it.

18 Sep, 2011

Hi Spritz! I was looking online for seeds to order for next year, and I found that there is a Rudbeckia called 'Autumn Shades'. I also grew one this year called 'Moreno', which is very similar to yours, but it is a bit darker, more like the dark rudbeckia flowers in your last two pictures. It was very easy to grow, and one packet has lots in it, so maybe one to try alongside your 'Autumn Shades'!

Lovely display Barbara, you have done really well there.

19 Sep, 2011

Well if you were not a fan of heucheras before... you certainly would be after looking at this set of photos! Lovely plant and colour combinations Spritz. I'm a great fan of rudbeckia cherrybrandy (a lovely red form) might be worth a try if you fancy a change

I've seen that, and it's a gorgeous colour - but not quite the right 'tone'. Thanks for the thought though. :-)

I'm hoping that the Heucheras settle in and give me some winter colour.

19 Sep, 2011

Just six weeks, it's lovely Spritz, the Rudbeckia is a star!

20 Sep, 2011

Thanks - and yes - Libet has kindly told me where I can buy Rudbeckia seeds to sow in the spring. They're supposed to be first-year flowering plants too. :-)

20 Sep, 2011

8 Oct, 2011

Thanks - sorry I missed your comment until now, Sandra.

10 Oct, 2011

This is great Spritz, guess you can see it from the front. Just the job for raising the spirits in the Autumn. You will have to have an autumn open day as well so we can all see it lol!

10 Oct, 2011

NO chance, Tetra! :-(( You'll have to make do with photos....

11 Oct, 2011

Aw shucks Spritz you spoil sport! Still, guess you must have to get SOME rest! lol!

11 Oct, 2011

What do you mean - REST? What's that? I'm busy 'bulbing'...that's a technical term (lol) for planting zillions of bulbs in my containers and in the beds as well! I still have several large bags of bulbs to plant, but the containers are still in full bloom so I hate the thought of ripping plants out. :-((

12 Oct, 2011

Is THAT what they call it - bulbing! Do you mean that job where your back breaks in two, your arm drops off pushing holes in the ground and you get sore fingers dropping roundish things into the holes? Or where you gasp for breath lugging bags of compost and grit to the wheelbarrow to make up lots of gritty compost to pile into pots that you then kill yourself trying to move into the right spot... and finally drag yourself to the dustbin to get rid of packets and labels and netting bags? ....thought that was called torture lol!

12 Oct, 2011

Yup, that's the one, Tetra. Maybe it's called 'Bulbing torture' or possibly 'Torture bulbing'?

Oh, and don't forget the naughty words when the BIG pot falls off its pot feet and you have to lug it back up!

AND the awful part of getting the old compost and plants and roots out of the pots! <sigh> More tomorrow....can I get it all done?

12 Oct, 2011

No rain, probly misty, quite warm, very little wind..just the job..fairly nice on Friday..you can sleep all Sat & Sun!

12 Oct, 2011

Oh that other thing...pots falling off pot feet..that where you get had up for foul language, especially when you trap your fingers!

12 Oct, 2011

Ah, but nobody would hear me in my garden, as you know! lol.

13 Oct, 2011

Lucky you..Im a disgrace to the neighbourhood..and they once thought I was a "lady" lol!

13 Oct, 2011

Hahahahahaha........we all know better, Tetra! :-D)

13 Oct, 2011

between you and me I found it a bit boring...

13 Oct, 2011

Let your hair down - it's much more fun! lol.

13 Oct, 2011
