Parham Park ... part 1

We recently visited Parham Park, nr. Storrington, West Sussex, which is approx. 14 miles North of us, below the South Downs.

Parham’s gardens consist of seven acres of Pleasure Grounds, which includes a cricket pitch, and a four acre Walled Garden.

The Elizabethan house and gardens are set in the heart of an ancient Deer park and have been restored by the Pearson family who bought Parham in 1922.

I took so many photos that I think it will be best to do the blogs in two parts! … Part 1 gives an idea of the history of the place. We packed a picnic and set off on a dry, slightly cloudy morning …

First views of the house from the car park and picnic area …

Attractive pond in the courtyard and some lovely Hostas …

Very surprised to see a Magnolia in bud …

The gardener had abandoned his/her tools for lunch …

Lots of statuary around the garden …

We chose to visit the Orchard first …

This one and his friends were making such a noise! …

This pig cleverly picked up, then carried the stick over to his friend … complete disinterest as you’ll see! …

Here is the three arched Summerhouse with the wonderful white marble statue by the Serbian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic …

Such a shame that she is tucked away in the corner … out of sight until you enter the Summerhouse …

Now we walk through a gate into the Walled Garden to find the Wendy House …

My 6’ 3" OH gives an idea of the scale of the building …

We then entered the Walled Garden … more of that in Part 2 … but here are some lovely sculptures and a beautiful arched window in a little shelter …

I have been unable to find out the significance of these carvings … shall keep searching! …

Well, you have probably had enough for one blog so I’ll stop now! … Part 2 to follow.

Fantastic pair of blogs. That's some Wendy House!
The statues look like they came from a church (derelict naturally!)
Its a shame that lovely statue is tucked away, but white marble does suffer from being outside.
The whole place is a dream, I could almost smell the borders. I think I prefer this to Petworth, so it will be another visit down south one day soon! Thanks again.

29 Aug, 2011

It's a tough choice, Tet, as Petworth House is just fantastic ... we didn't view Parham House this visit ... just the gardens ... sounds as though you need to do a tour of West Sussex! ... :o)))
