Wareham, Dorset - a short break

We are just back from a relaxing few days in a cottage beside a bubbling mill stream, where we had chickens and ducks for company.

I might try to paint this scene

My favourite sitting spot!

Our only drizzly day meant the chance to explore the semi tropical gardens at Abbotsbury. Every time I saw a bench, I put down a plastic bag, and took a photo with my iPad, not necessarily being able to name these random scenes.

Scary rope bridge – not for the faint-hearted

Sequoia

Not a real donkey, but very lifelike!

Took this pic of the huge Echium for a friend who grows them

Lovely pond

Luckily the sun did come out eventually, so the last bench meant coffee time … and OF COURSE I didn’t walk across that rope bridge – would you?!
Happy September gardening everyone :)

So glad you had a nce break Sheila. The cottage's situation looks idyllic and it was nice to see a picture of you! Thank you for including pictures of your visit to the gardens at Abbotsbury, they were really interesting, but as for that rope bridge...no thank you!

That’s true Julia, but for once I would have loved a few more days … it was such a beautiful relaxing spot, and we were so lucky to have warm sunshine too 🙂.

A well deserved holiday, Sheila! What a really lovely, serene place. The cottage setting is really very picturesque. Lovely to see you in the first pic - all set for relaxation/and or exploring! Love your favourite sitting spot! It is very enticing. Definitely a place to sit and enjoy a coffee or a small glass of wine! Lovely!
Your pics of Abbotsbury are smashing! Lots of interesting plants and trees, very lush and green! The rope bridge…I may have been tempted! ☺️

Thanks Kate it really was a perfect little garden to relax in.

I don’t have a head for heights but I would have enjoyed watching you on the bridge 🙂.

When she was little we took my daughter to see the 'Wareham Bears'. I don't know if that little museum is still going! It's a beautiful area and your cottage looks idyllic. It must have been a wrench to leave that spot.
Abbotsbury gardens are well worth visiting and your pics. are evocative. I'm glad you've had a good time, Sheila, - we all desperately need a change of scenery after the last few months.

Thanks Ange, I’m glad you know the area, and yes - I was very reluctant to leave. There was something special about watching the river 🙂. Hope you will have a break somewhere soon.

It was Eileen, thank you. Yes, good memories.

Many thanks Klahanie ... we were lucky to have a warm, sunny break. Do you have any plans for a holiday in the near future?

What can be more restful than a little stream like that? makes you think you could just sit (or stand) and stare at it for hours!. So glad you were able to have a lovely holiday at long last! Did you venture over the bridge? Not for stilettos...

That looks a gem of a place to enjoy a holidays, I could relax by that water for hours, having ducks and chickens to keep me company would be a delight, the gardens you visited looking grand for a visit, you made me chuckle at the picture of you sitting on the plastic bag, I always carry two in the bottom of my camera bag, they are a godsend when it comes to having a rest on a wet day, a few years back I would have been on that bridge taking my photo's scaring my hubby, he is petrified of heights, now I don't know whether I would be as brave..
Lovely blog and photo's Sheila, thankyou for sharing..

Thanks very much Stera, yes sitting and watching the water was exactly what I did.

Thank you for your lovely comments Lincs … my OH would have wanted me to cross the bridge just so that he could see my terrified face!

Nice to see photos you took on your break Sheila, Abbotsbury is beautiful, we went there some years ago.
I don't know about the rope bridge, it depends how far the drop is under it.

Lol Hywel … thank you 🙂.

Would I walk across that rope bridge? Sure! At my age I probably wouldn’t notice the difference between it and a dead level sidewalk.

20 Sep, 2021

Wow Loosestrife - good for you!

21 Sep, 2021

I might have been tempted to try to cross the bridge, just to prove to myself that I could....but might have looked for a safer bridge on the way back...(and of course I might have discovered half way over that I couldn't....)

Sue, there was a sign at the start saying it was forbidden to turn back! Presumably it wouldn’t be safe trying to pass someone walking in the opposite direction …

I might add that a couple shots of scotch evens everything out.

Thank you for your lovely photos of Abbotsbury tropical gardens. I did make a visit there once with my walks club, but we had already walked for miles, had a break, then visited the Swannery. It was too much really to try & cram in a visit to the gardens as well! I think we were there for just under an hour, which did not do it justice & I was already tired. I thought I would visit again one day but I never have :-( so thank you again for the tour. The rope bridge would be beyond me nowadays, it doesn't look very flat.

23 Sep, 2021

Thanks Josee, me neither … that bridge looks decidedly wobbly!

23 Sep, 2021

Not being allowed to turn back is rather a disincentive...
