? Last chance to enjoy autumn colours - inspired by Bampy!

When I saw the early-morning sun highlighting the leaves at the end of the garden, I dashed for the camera thinking that this might be the last chance to capture them. Any day now there could be a severe frost, and then the leaves will come tumbling down . . .

This is the Great White Cherry (will be “great” one day!), meanwhile dwarfed by Sycamore. The yellow-leafed tree on the left is a pear, and the bent trunk on the right is what remains of an apple tree.

Better close-up of Prunus Tai Haku

We love our Whitebeam – planted from a “stick” about 20 years ago – seen here at 8.30 am!

Thanks for joining me. :))

Beautiful autumn scenes you have down there Sheila. Everything here is still green but it is only down the varieties of trees and shrubs I am surrounded with. Autumn has arrived here too.

Such beauty Sheila, sadly not for long as you say! But enjoy for now.

Thank you Bampy, Costas and Grandma . . . we've been lucky in this part of the world with blue skies and sunshine this autumn.
Bampy - the field at the back (one of the reasons we chose this house) WAS a school playing field. Since the school closed about 10 years ago, we've been expecting the builders to move in, but no sign of them yet. :))

We too back onto a field Sheila thats been empty for many a year now, but we have fought against its building on it over 14 times!! Yes its taken many a letter to stop 268 dwellings being built on it!! Nightmare. We keep saying we should move away but where too?.....

Same here Gm. Unfortunately I dont live on the conservation side of our village, but it is greenbelt & all the properties are pre Edwardian. Had lots of character..past tense because many of them have been bought up & turned tastelessly into plastic palaces.with plastic extensions. Funny, because 24 years ago when my now late partner & I purchased a derelict one to restore sympathetically, using reclaimed materials,or making identical ones, which we were told by planning we HAD to,even if we'd had any desire (which we didnt) to use cheaper ones. With the houses now nearly a quarter of a century older makes the 'planning rules change' excuses questionable...& all since a builder/property developer moved into a cottage nearby, with lots of ground, buying up even more,& flouting every rule blatently, destroying the flora & fauna, the natural peace,& everything else...despite complaints. Makes you wonder doesnt it? Keep fighting Gm! even non-minted householders with lovely gardens,& love for the environment have rights I'm told.

Great minds Sheila...we had sun today as well and I took a photo of my cherry tree thinking the same as you...."quick, before it disappears!!" Cherries are the biz in autumn aren't they? and Acers of all kinds too.

26 Oct, 2011

Thank you Sticki and Clarice. Karen, this is the first autumn that the leaves have stayed on the Cherry more than about a day - so it's been a treat to enjoy it for a week or two!

Lovely blog Sheila......I'm amazed we haven't had any frost yet. It will be November next week!!!!!

26 Oct, 2011

Thank you Linda. But don't remind me about November . . . worst month of the year for me! Do you know Thomas Hood's poem? It's called "NO!"

No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -
No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day -
No sky - no earthly view -
No distance looking blue -

(and then goes on a bit, until . . )

No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds, -
November!

Not exactly cheerful . . . I think I'll hibernate, read lots of books, and look forward to December. :))

26 Oct, 2011

I might even hibernate till March,Sheila, after reading that poem....:o))

26 Oct, 2011

I think I'v already started my hibernation along with Turbo. Currently reading Nelson Demille's 'Plum Island' brilliant & intriguing plus I have got some dark chocolate bars in stock ( the large red ones ) essential winter supplement.
I like that poem Sheila despite not being a fan of the wet British winter I have to say!

26 Oct, 2011

:)) (will have to Google Demille now . . . ) Dark chocolate and red wine - life's essentials . . .
