The plot thickens!

Perhaps that should be widens.

Over the last few years I have sneaked a couple of inches from the edges of the borders, so that OH wouldnt notice the diminishing grass.

Well this year I decided to go for a full 18" instead. So I started the task about 2 weeks ago but in fits and starts as I had to fit it in around the girls and work.

I used an old length of hose pipe to mark the curve, much easier once it warmed up and was more flexible.

Last week I got all the turf up.

After I had dug the rather chalky soil and encriched it with leaf mould and compost from my own bins I started to look for plants to add.

I moved forward several perenials that were being crowded out by the Hemerocallis and the Anemone japonica.

I also planted some new tulips ‘Uncle Tom’, a couple of Eremurus and Geum coccinea ‘Koi’

I also move some tulips from the side border to this one as it fitted the red/yellow and orange theme.

Oops sorry forgot to rotate this image.
Then horror of horrors I lost my wedding ring. Thankfully found and back on my finger where it has been for the last 28yrs. Took a mate 1 1/2 hrs with a metal detector to find it, lots of false alarms due to the nails from when the house was built.

I have planted some other hemerocallis, asphodelines and knautia ‘red knight’.

Later this week my eldest brother is coming over for a few days and we are off to the garden centres with a shopping list.

So the plot has ‘thickened’. I also have plans for the bed opposite :o))

That looks so much better SBG doesn't it - sort of fits in your garden much more and how exciting to be able to go and buy a whole new lot of plants for it. Have a super time plant shopping.

Good job! So glad you found your ring! My Granddad lost his ring and in the 60's gardening and sadly never found it. The house was sold decades ago and I've often wondered if anyone found it!
My beds have a tendancy to widen too!!

26 Apr, 2011

He did notice as the hose pipe was on the grass for at least 10 days in between jobs. I had hinted at widening them in the dark days of winter.

He says he doesnt mind as long as there is some green, or he will concrete it for the car

OH NO HE WONT!!!!!!

I am off to Reighton on Wednesday Judywolf, then the 3 around Dunswell and the 3 in Cottingham plus 2 at Beverley. But not all in the same day.

Thats sad Lulu33 I wonder if it was ever found?

you should find a few things you like between the 9 places!!?

26 Apr, 2011

wow it looks lovely mine requires a lot more work till it reaches such a high standard but i am still proud of what i have done to mine so far.

How wonderful to get more space for planting! Im trying to find more wall space for clematis. You have made a wonderful job of the soil SBG, everything should flourish well with all that compost! So much so, you may have to dig out a bed in the middle of the lawn (that should stop the car idea lol!) Dont forget to leave a space for the schitzostylis, on their way later this week.

Used to work at Coletta and Tyson many years ago , before it became a garden centre. That was mighty hot work ..pricking off young bedding plants all day under glass !
Hope you have a massive car to fit all the plants in on Wednesday !!

I`m sure your OH wont object Sgirl you have such beautiful curves - and so well planted. Happy plant hunting with your brother your sure to enjoy.

What a brilliant idea using the hose for the curve. Glad you had a friend with a metal detector. I have lost two wedding rings - one is under a clump of rhubarb in Stoke on Trent but I couldn't find it. The other is somewhere in a vicarage garden in Stafford. Now I don't wear one as my knuckles are too small to keep them on in the garden!

Hey, I gotta be different (of course!) my first wedding ring "got lost" in second hand jewellery shop where I flogged it after the divorce..the second had to be sawn off when I put on too much weight and the third...still have that but its getting tight! I must do more gardening ...

26 Apr, 2011

Widening boarders = more plants great idea, and less grass to mow - wonderful idea. The soil looks really rich, everything should flourish - well done you.

Talk about losing wedding rings, I lost mine icing a christmas cake 26 years ago - it got covered in icing so I took it off, clearing the work surface I must have gathered it up and put it in the kitchen bin, knowing the bin men were due the next day, I then emptied the kitchen bin into the big bin and put it out for the bin men, it wasn't until the following night to my horror did I realise what I had done - so I have never worn one since (how sad!) - silly me.

The schistosylis is going in the opposite bed thanks tetrarch. Non of mine have survived the winter.

I have a shopping list for all my plants. :o)

I am amazed at the number of us who have lost rings in the garden. Cake making seems as good a way as any Kfunster. sad though non the less.

I'm all for geting rid of grass. I have none at all. I think your borders will look much better now they've been widened.
And there is the story about the ring lol

30 Apr, 2011

the main reason for widening them was to get a better balance of plants, sizes /shapes etc. And of course new plants too :o)

30 Apr, 2011

It's always exciting to get new plants :o) and you need room for them.

30 Apr, 2011

My sentiments entirely there Hywel, who needs grass anyway. lol. I love to see nice big borders Seaburngirl. It is looking lovely.
