In Ireland with Libet.

There are so many things to show you, so I will do the blogs over a few days starting off with the National Trusts Mount Stewart, which was adapted from the 1956 original by Edith Lady Londonderry, and supplemented , as with the garden by the National trust. Lady Londonderry handed over a portion of the gardens to them in N. Ireland with the consent of her daughter , Viscount Bury and her husband. Thus ensuring that the gardens would be permanently and preserved for the future. Lady Londonderry is quoted to have said that gardens are meant to be lived in and enjoyed and be a source of pleasure to all who may visit them. So sit back and enjoy! Don’t forget your cuppa!

Now where shall we go first!

Just entering the first of many gardens. To the right of this is a very long pergola which would take you to another part of the garden.

We’ll just have a wander round now…

Well, I had to include one picture of us posing, didn’t I!

Any idea what this is? Close up, it was really huge.

How about this one. This is very unusual and we couldn’t find out what it is. I’ll give you a closer look….

This is the Shamrock garden which is surrounded by a 7 feet high hedge of English yew.

This was a very strange part of the garden as all the main trunks of what looked like silver birches had been stripped of leaves and just left looking like a large pole.

This is called Dodo Terrace with a Loggia at one end , and two red Griffins on the roof guarding the approach. This is where you can sit and relax through here and also get a good view of the south front of the house.

There are many strange ornaments around this garden even including a crocodile!

We were definitely not keen on these! We’ll move on to the Mairi Garden where the youngest daughter of the Viscountess Bury was placed here every day in her pram to go to sleep. In the centre is a fountain with a lead statue of the child designed for her father , Lord Londonderry. The fountain represents the “Mairi Mairi, Quite Contrary” of the nursery rhyme.

I have never seen such beautiful Gladioli and they were huge!

And gorgeous white Lilies.

Hydrangea Pyramidalis. The flower head was bigger than my hand.

I couldn’t believe the size of this flower on the Gunnera. Everything in these gardens were larger than normal. What must they feed them on!

This is the Spanish Garden and the last garden of our visit. There are many more to see, but unfortunately too much for my hubby to walk round. We probably only covered a quarter of this famous garden , so we head on out to the cafe for a well needed cuppa. I hope you all enjoyed this as much as we did.

Oops, sorry, I forgot to show you the main part of the Spanish Garden.

One last look before we go.

What a great blog. I love the yew pillars in the Spanish garden. I think your white flowers in pic 7 are Galtonia common name summer hyacinth.

Right, I've just enjoyed that tour immensely, having been to get my cuppa first, as instructed. Thank you for sharing it, Rose. What an amazing place, and so green and beautiful, and still so many flowers, too. You girls are looking good, too! It's gone straight into my faves, sunshine and all.

Oh that garden is something really special, loved the tour, thank you Rose - it has some amazing features, so glad you enjoyed your visit. I love the 'viaduct' feature near the end with the shrubs all joined in to appear as one it must take days and days to keep that trimmed to look as spectacular as this. Thank you. :O)

Thoroughly enjoyed that Rose!
Just logged on for a wee while after dinner - that certainly walked off all those calories..lol!
Plently to see - those white Gladioli are gorgeous aren't they. So many different styles - not sure if I have could pick a favourite and that little statue of Mairi, Mairi is beautiful!
Always fascinated me the statues some of these stately houses have. One of our local estate houses has Wart Hogs - to signify the family name of Maitland Hog.
thank you for showing us around :)

Thanks Stickie, it is an amazing place as is this area of N. Ireland as well. Very green, but thats down to all the rain they get. We were so lucky to get sunny days. We didn't want to come home. I just wish we lived nearer to each other.
Thanks Simbad. I will be looking this one up, just haven't had the time yet.
All sunny days Chris and considering the awful weather they've had we must be "the righteous ones!" Lol.
Thanks Stereagram, Junna , Clarice and Diane Bully for your lovely comments.
I'm glad you enjoyed it Lincslass. Thankyou.
Thankyou Scotsgran for telling me the name of this plant. I will let Libby know. I loved the pillars as well. It was difficult to find one specific area as it was all wonderful.
Thankyou very much Gattina and I hope you enjoyed your cuppa. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I enjoyed being called a "girl!"Thanks also for putting this in your faves. Hopefully this week , there will be more to come. Watch this space!
Thanks Barbara, it went all too quickly. Can't wait for next time! We loved all of what we saw and wish we'd been able to see more. My hubby did well walking as far as he did .
You really wouldn't want THAT big a garden , would you Sheilar! Of course I could always come and help you! lol. Thanks for your comments.
I'm pleased you enjoyed your very long walk Scottish! lol. They had lots more statues as well and all have a story behind them. Its hard to imagine that it was actually someones garden. They obviously had plenty of help. I would be in my element working there.
Thanks Stevie and hallo. We had such fun , but wish we lived much closer to each other.

Thanks Mel, more to come, its just finding the time. I usually wait for wet days , but as we are having an Indian summer at the moment, I am outside!
Thanks again Stickie. I didn't want to come home!Perhaps we should move to Ireland! Lol.
Thankyou Hywel . Yes it was nice to be together. You will enjoy the next blog I do. Its totally opposite to this one as its more to do with nature and woodland.

I went for my first trip to Ireland last weekend for my brothers wedding, what a beautiful place, my brother moved there a couple of years ago, wish I'd had longer to look round, no excuse now though we've already got an invite to go and stay next year :-)

I agree Simbad, we didn't want to leave! we were so lucky with the weather though, we might have felt different if it had been raining all the time! The people are so lovely there as well.
