Caterpillars ate my parsley and disappeared. Where did they go?

One day a little bright green caterpillar showed up on my parsley. I had plenty of growing so I said “enjoy”. The next day he brought all his freinds and relatives.

I’d like to know how they all got there? I didn’t see them crawl up the pot? They just appeared.

And they ate and they ate.

Came out the next morning and the whole plant was devoured and no signs of caterpillars. Where did they go? I did’nt see the crawl away. I didn’t see them turn into butterflies and fly away. Any ideas?

These look like cinnabar moth caterpillars regina -poor parsley ,and you :)) They probably moved to munch on something else -or to pupate after stuffing themselves with your parsley !!

Sorry regina on looking closer I think they may be eastern black swallowtail butterflies ! It's difficult to compare when you can't see both photo's together. Google this one and see what you think. They won't have flown off overnight, they will have found somewhere to pupate in shelter and emerge in spring. Remember to bring in your parsley earlier next year lol :)

Oh Dear very happy fatty catty's, I'm afraid they will be off on someone else's parsley now methinks.

Some of us plant parsley just for the pleasure of seeing the Swallowtail butterflies! And Dutchman's pipe vine. (Aristolochia). Small price to pay for such beauty.

Thanks all, googled swallowtail and know how it all began.
Neat stuff. I will be more then happy to plant enough for all next year. (Still can't figure out how they crawled off that table without me seeing them).

I found something like this on a plant of mine one year. It was clinging to the stem of a plant. I watched as it went from lovely colors to brown to blend in with the stem. It looked just like the plant. So I kept an eye on it as I wondered what it was. I eventually put it in a tup with air holes in it and some cuttings as I didn't want to miss the transformation. It took a very long time, weeks or months. One day I decided that maybe I killed it accidently :-( It was clinging to one of the air hole cuttings that I made in the tub, all holes were bent inwards and it was as I didn't know transforming it's self. Soon after thinking if that doesn't do something soon I should get rid of it. I think it was the next day I was on my balcony tidying up and thought I should get rid of that tub when much to my delighted surprise there was a swallowtail butterfly in it. It must have just hatched out I ran to get my camera and enjoyed a moment of admiration for it's beauty as it was so beautiful before I took the lid of and it went on it's merry way. Hopefully! I know, I know, I hear some of you saying that was terrible of me to lock it up like that but I have new appreciation for them now. Perhaps I saved it's life in a way by protecting it.
So your caterpillars could have found a stems to blend into. They could be even under the table!
