home alone on a sunny day.

So today the sun came out and the wind stopped blowing! A rare event for us on at the top of this hill over the past few weeks. I had planned to buy paint and start paining out master room as we’ve just had all our bedrooms replastered BUT gardening seemed way more fun. We had always planned to extend the border we put in at the end of the summer but had been putting it off as the weather has been wet and windy and we had no plants to put in. Last week the bare root roses I ordered arrived so it was time to extend. We have gone for ‘blue for you’ as that did amazingly well in my old garden in Scotland.we also decided to try ‘ice cream’ as we wanted something white and it’s a running joke that my fiancé and his family really really enjoy ice cream. As the title suggests I did this little extension by myself which was quite a task having had Richards much needed help last time, he is a dab hand at deturfing. The other issue is that we filled up any depleted or poor beds with the extra soil from the first border so I didn’t have anywhere to put the soil out of this one. For the meantime I’ve put some in bags and I think we will have to take out a bit more. If anyone has any idea how we can get rid of it do share. Our tip charges for soil. All in all I’m quite pleased with how it turned out and I found a half bag or horse manure I had forgotten about so the roses will be very happy (I hope)!

Looking good. Well done doing it by yourself, I know that feeling as hubby isn't into gardening and also a workaholic 😀. Where I live is a local closed Facebook group for our area, maybe there is something similar there. People are always posting on it about free top soil open collection. Hope you find a home for it.

Freecycle groups seem to be everywhere. Worth checking. People are always glad of something for nothing.

Have you any space for a raised bed or two? Or room to stack the turfs grass side down to rot down for good loam?

Well done! I agree with Eirlys about Freecycle as there are always folk who need top soil, often in small quantities for a little project. It's a great way to find stuff! I collected some logs to add to the existing log-pile, meaning the person didn't have to worry about taking them away, simples!

Hi Rachel, I thought I had already added you to my favourite's list, but having just checked, you don't appear in my list, so I've remedied the situation now, I wouldn't normally see blogs that are not from my favourites, because I only look at other blogs, when there aren't many questions.
I agree with Steragram as regards the turve's, if you have the space, it will make good loam, which you can use in compost mixes, a good place to start with loam based compost making, is to look up the different John Innes formulas, also if you get the chance, try making some leaf-mould, which is also good for mixing into seed compost, for seeds which are slightly harder to germinate than normal, in all the 65 years I've been gardening, I've never taken removed turf to the tip, even if you don't use it for compost mixes, you can spread it on your beds and borders, and it will improve the structure of your soil, Derek.

Further to Derek’s comment, If you want to have a go, and have space somewhere, pile the turves, upside-down and in a couple of years you’ll have some great compost....if you have a spare corner in the garden.
