How can I tell the difference between edible plums and ornamental plums?

True, the only reliable way is by the fruit. Plums grown for ornamental purposes also tend to have smaller fruit than commercial varieties, but may still be delicious. Varieties of Prunus cerasifera make excellent jam and tarts.
