Pruning can be done any time during the growing season.

Once you have the shrub down to the size you want prune it fairly regularly once the leaves fade from red to green and you will be rewarded with a new flush of red leaves within a few weeks.

I agree. Its best to do it little and often. That gives you a nice bushy plant and a regular show of attractive red leaves.
