Has my honeysuckle died?

I planted a honeysuckle this year and it has established itself really well with new shoots climbing up the trellis, however the base of the plant has gone woody and very brittle? Is this normal? It is positioned in a shaded part of the garden but does get a little sun early morning.

Unfortunately, yes it is normal - honeysuckle is best grown up something where you can't really see the bit of it between the soil and about 3/4 feet up, so scrambling over a shed or something. Otherwise you're stuck hacking it back after its flowered to keep as much of it green and fresh as possible.
