If we clear this space under the trees and dig over and prepare the ground for good drainage would this be a good place for a large bed of Hosta's?

I am no expert but I am told they like shade, I also like Hosta's - very robust

You'll need to dig in lots of compost as hostas like a rich soil. Slugs also love them...

As long as you can give them enough reliable moisture, it looks fine.
