Hi whilst out on the garden today we have found the remains of a tree fern its been nected for years but I'd like to know whether I can kick it back into life.

Its either alive or it isn't - look and feel inside the top, if you can see and feel nodules where ferns will grow from, its alive, and provided it looks healthy at the top, you can try a weak solution of sugar and water, poured into the top. NOt much you can do otherwise - they just need water, dappled shade and shelter from winter weather.
