Ferns

My ferns are unfolding as per normal but the leaves and stems appear dead and black. Any ideas. Is it lack of shade or water?

Hello Ian Welcome to GoY. If the fronds are unfrling then its not dead. The colouration may be due to frost damage or do you mean last years fronds. If you do mean last years then they could well be dead. many are deciduous, just cut them off at the base and enjoy the new stuff.
