I have lots of large fly type insects burrowing into my lawn.
This happens every year although its seems a little early this year. They leave little heaps of soil all over the lawn and I don't think my lawn thrives as well as it should

are you meaning craneflies also known as daddy long legs. the grubs that develop eat the grass roots, so your lawn will suffer. they are fat catterpillar like grubs called leather jackets.

Have you seen the'flies'. There are mining bees which dig into the ground to lay their eggs. They leave little holes and mounds of soil like worm casts. They are harmless to your grass and very good news for the garden. They do not look like either bumble bees or honeybees, they are often black fronted with a brown or orange rear.

Personally, I don't mind my grass looking slightly worse for wear. I'd rather have the wildlife in my garden. We have a teenage, a dog and a rabbit and they all ruin the grass anyway! Plus it gets ruined with our garden furniture each summer!

Through bread or something out to attract starlings, which probe the ground with their sharp beaks and spear the grubs - they are good at gobling up leatherjackets.

I have deliberately infested my Lawn with VERONICA FILIFORMIS a little creeping plant with pretty blue flowers, also HIERACIUM PILOSELLA a yellow flowred Hawkweed with woolly leaves. Makes it more like Rabbit cropped downland.

thanks for all your replies and tips, I think what I have is exactly what owdboggy has described and this information might be useful to others who have these bees in their garden.
