You could try cucumbers in a frame. Also useful for striking some cuttings - lots of uses. Go for it - you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for that. This is an organic veg growing allotment and the slug battle is on going. I have grit and copper round my plants and beer traps in the corner of each bed. Can't be there of an evening with my torch to pick the blighters off by hand like my chum who strings them with a needle and thread to hang from the bird table. I'm a Budhist at heart and feel bad about the whole killing thing but its game on with the slugs. Any other suggestions for slug defence or am I in the wrong bit of the forum?

Personally I'd get on and grow your veg and not bother with a cold frame - they are far more use to overwintering tender plants and bringing on seedlings than actually growing food crops in. As for the slugs have you tried nematodes? Alternatively you could plant a few hostas and let them munch through those - slugs love hostas!
