I want to make my own Garlic spray,as my commercial one is now used up..Please could someone tell me what proportions of garlic bulbs to water,,how long to leave it before straining off,and would I need to dilute the liquid before use..if so,what would be the ratio for dilution ? thank you..

Take a handful of garlic bulbs (the complete bulb skin and all) put in your blender with enough water to allow you to blends to a thick liquid, add a few chilli peppers if you like. Blend completely, strain and used diluted 1 part garlic liquid to 10 parts water with a little agricultural soap or organic washing up liquid.

That's interesting, thanks Moon Grower for the 'recipe'. Does it kill black fly and green fly?

It doesn't 'kill' anything you apply as a systemic to deter the little dears from landing on the plants in the first place... You need to re-spray every week or so depending on how wet it has been, or not in our case right now!

My mix is a little different to Moongrowers.

2 bruised large cloves soaked in one litre of boiling water for twenty four hours. Strain, add 10ml of sunflower oil and then emulsify. Works well on light RSM attacks.

I like the look of MG's mix though..............

Thank you very much, Mg,and Meanie..both recipes are very helpful..It's the only thing I use to deter aphids, and it works well for me..I will get some Garlic tomorrow..with this wonderful weather, they may be here sooner than I thought :o)

I'll be giving MG's mix a go as I finally appear to be RSM free.

I see, thanks Moongrower. Would you know if it deters red lily leaf beetle :-)

Just to confuse the issue.......The one I made a note of from a tv prog to try is....... Boil 1 crushed garlic bulb for 5mins in 1 litre of water then strain.Use 1 tablespoon pr ltr of water and spray.Sounds the easiest but wether it works or not is anybodies guess.

Poppy - sorry that is rubbish! The boiling will have killed off the smell from the garlic which is what the bugs hate!

Dawnsaunt - should do but only if you spray before they land!

MG - what chillies do you use? I just wondered as all I have are the super hot Birds Eye chillies.

What are RSM attacks? RSM stands for Regimental Sergeant Major in my book, and I don't think they normally attack plants!

Red spider mites - evil little sods!

I don't add chillies myself but know of folk that do - so far as I'm aware any chilli works.

Ahh - I'll leave the chillies out then. I was concerned about capsaicin burn.
The small amount of oil in my mix was almost fatal to my Tibouchina.

How do I say thanks?
