I have noticed that the petals of many of our small daffodils in the garden have been eaten - in some cases leaving nothing behind! We think it might be a beetle or small fly of some sort or even sparrows. No sign of slugs or snails yet! Do you have any ideas on what it might be and on what we can do to prevent it?
Many thanks for all the help I have been given so far, I am so glad that I found this site.

I think slugs - My Irises disappeared and going by all the dead slugs after I put down some pellets, slugs are the culprits.

Could also be rabbits or deer depending how rural where you live is.

Slugs and snails love daffodil petals - they ignore the leaves though. Usually you see a slime trail somewhere or other though.

All of you think that baby slugs must have done the damage so I shall have to be on the attack tomorrow! I have already protected hostas with pellets, having been advised to scatter them on Valentine's Day. I shall now know how to protect my little dafs - thank you.

Too early yet for thrips, so I would go with the advice above and spread loads of slug pellets. Check plants and under leaves for caterpillars of any kind. Slugs and snails are a real problem at the moment - last year's warm weather seems to have produced a multitude over the winter. I am due to lift the sheeting off part of my veg plot tomorrow and no doubt will gross out on the slugs at the surface ... pellets at the ready!!
