how do I stop caterpillers from laying eggs on the brassicas without reverting to sprays?

It's the butterflies that lay eggs, then the eggs become caterpillars - you would need a mesh cage to keep them off. Otherwise, keep a watch on the underside of the leaves for the patches of eggs and wipe them off.
