Could be an acacia, which covers both thorn and pods in the question. Robinia, as bamboo suggests, is also known as false acacia. Leaves of the robinia are bright light green in the spring, which may help you id this.

Maybe Gleditsia or Robinia - hard to say, a photo would help, particularly of the seed pods
