Choose miniature daffodils, such as Tete a Tete - they only get about 6 inches high and you don't notice the foliage so much. There are also miniature tulips (Greigii for instance) but I have to admit they're not so impressive as the taller ones. But remember that tulips aren't really something you plant and expect to keep appearing year on year - most people treat them as annuals and replace every year or every 2 years. It's also a bit late for planting daffodils, though tulips are fine.

How about doing what some people do - plant bulbs in pots, sink them in the soil and remove them after they've flowered?

Or have pots in the greenhouse if you have one, for earlier flowering, and pop them pot and all into spaces between shrubs.

I dont mind the leaves post flowering as I find the 6 weeks goes very quickly and the flowers are so much better for it.

Early-flowering annuals, such as pansies or violas, would also distract from the dying foliage, and will also cover some of the lower species.
