Do I remove the old fruit

United Kingdom

There's a large fig tree in the house I have just moved into. Its not been looked after at all and is full of old fruit from previous year. I want to prune it back and have been told I can be quite drastic with the pruning but don't know what to do with all the old fruit that is on it. If I should remove it, when is best?

I would think you could remove the fruit anytime. If you are pruning the tree anyway then just remove it as you go. I wouldn't leave it on the tree. It will just rot and attract insects.

How do I say thanks?
