Multi-purpose compost

United Kingdom

Instead of buying new multi-purpose compost every year can I just add slow-release fertiliser to last year's compost to replenish it? Is there a down side to doing this?

This isnt a good idea as the structure will break down. also if there are any pests or eggs they will be there for the next season.
i often put spent compost onto the compost heap or throw it on the surface of the beds to let the birds feed on the pests. if there is obvious fungus it goes in the household bin.
