care for potted heliconia choconiana

Leaves have turned yellow and dying. green leaves are faded.blooming has stopped.New leaves have been sprouting from the soil. plant gets full sun and kept watered. should I be using an acidic fertilizer? currently using miracle- gro slow release pellets.(10-16-10).
