I HAVE VARIOUS INDOOR HOUSEPLANTS ON WINDOW LEDGES WHICH HAVE DEVELOPED A WHITE 'FILM' OVER THE SOILS . A NEIGHBOUR HAS SAID THAT THIS IS A FORM OF ROT AND I SHOULD CHANGE THE SOIL. ARGUING THAT THE PLANTS ARE STILL THRIVING AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS IN SUCH SOIL AND I DON'T REALLY WISH TO DISTURB THEM -,WHO IS ACTUALLY RIGHT ON THIS ?

Don't worry Gemini, the white film around your pots is a harmless fungus for large plants. Do not repot if your plants are doing well. Cover the film up with small pebbles or large grit.

You could take off the top couple of inches and replace it with fresh, then you should cover the top with a layer of horticultural grit.

I agree with Andrearichter. Compost eventually degrades and needs replacing.

How do I say thanks?
