I have what I belive to be a vibernum juddii which has a massive growth as shown in the first picture with a close up in the second. This growth has come from just above ground level and it erect with no side shoots. While the bulk of the shrub is woody this growth is not. As you can see the leaves are completely different. I fancy this is about 2 year's growth.

Can you please explain this and what should I do about it? What will happen if I do nothing?

Could be a sport I'd cut it back at ground level.

I haven't heard that expression before!

Don't be tempted to leave it and see what happens. I was slow to realise I'd got one and I'm still not sure if the viburnum is going to survive. It's in a very poor condition.

No I hadnt either Cammomile! so I looked it up - 'In botany, a sport is a part of a plant (normally a woody plant, but sometimes in herbs as well) that shows morphological differences from the rest of the plant. Sports may differ by foliage shape or color, flowers, or branch structure.
Sports with desirable characteristics are often propagated vegetatively to form new cultivars. Such selections are often prone to "reversion", meaning that part or all of the plant reverts to its original form'.

Yup you've got it Drc not something you want to let grow on unless it looks extremely interesting, which this does not!

also the sport can sap the strength of the main plant causing slow growth in extreme cases..

I wonder if V. juddii is ever grafted onto V. opulus, since that's what that wild shoot looks like?

I wondered about that too TugB
