I have had my acer for three years now - I got it as a gift in a pot, it has hardly done anything, and the leaves are so small, can anyone offer advice.

How big is the acer and how big is the pot it is in? Have you fed it regularly and kept it watered? If it is still in the pot it was given to you in I would expect it to be completely pot bound by now it will need repotting into a larger pot or, better yet into the ground. Need ericaceous compost if you keep it in a pot and neutral to acidic soil in the ground.
