Having trawled through a couple of books the closest I can find is for the one with red flowers. Could it be an Akebia? My book says its a climbing shrub tho. and it would be nice if the photo showed the leaves so we can see the stalk and leaflets more clearly. Still looking for the other one!

Are these in fact some kind of Abutilons? as No1 reminds me of Abutilon Kentish bell?
No 2 reminds me of Abutilon Megapotamicum?

Oh yes Drc I see what you mean...just looked it up in my RHS book and Kentish Bell seems a good fit for first one.
These plants are new to me, rather nice too.

The main problem in my mind is that Abutilon flowers hang singly or in pairs from the leaf axils, like most mallow family members, not in clusters. Also, the calyces of the first one aren't like Abutilon's, and the second one's sepals aren't fused into a calyx.

I agree Tugb it is the flowers that 'look somewhat like' Abutilon, the leaves in the first picture do they go with the flowers? or are they just over hanging the leaves?

Welcome to GOY Dgw, great to have names now, lets hope Digger gets back and confirms them. Do you happen to grow the first one as I think its a great looking plant but I wondered how hardy it was?

Yes ,have had kirengashoma in my garden for 5-6 years .I am just outside Edinburgh and previous 2 winters we have been to minus 20 and outrageous amounts of snow, but the plant re-appears none the worse .I think its a Japanese native.

No I'm not testing anyone!
These 2 plants were spotted in a garden near Northampton on an NGS open garden day and I forgot to get the names. My wife likes unusual plants so the hunt is on!
