Looking for a name of a plant...

Essex/NJ, United States

Hello All,
I know this is a little unusual, but who else would i ask?

I'm writing a poem and looking to use the name of a plant that dies very very quickly Something that will die as quickly as it grows. Any body out there have any suggestions? Thanks very much!

Hi Poet, Can't think of a plant, don't expect many people would bother to grow somethin that dies that quick, but how about a Day Lily or Morning Glory where the flowers are short lived? Any help?

Evening Primroses do that as well, Poppies and so do Cistus shrubs. Each flower just lasts one day. I'm sure that there is a plant...I will try to remember what it is.

A Day Lily - it only lasts a day.

Maccrimmon made me laugh out loud! Hmm, Joenne & GF, Well I didn't know Daylilies lasted only a day -- though that would make sense with the name! And Thanks Spritzhenry for Evening Primroses, and Poppies and Cistus Shrubs -- they have lovely sounding names, really...oh yes, and Morning Glory is a pretty name and I will make note of them, for future use as well.

I was really stuck, and not that it matters so much, as it's only a poem, but I do like to make sure I am honest! Thank you all for your help! And so quickly, before I lose the "flow" so to speak! :-)

Plants which grow like that are called 'ephemera' There are a fair number of weed species which do it, but obviously gardeners prefer something a little longer lasting as a plant.
Chickweed, Hairy bittercress are two.
Many of the Desert annuals are ephemera, but names are a different matter.

Dahlias after a frost die pretty quickly, or Bizzy Lizzies.. Lots of words rhyme with 'mush'!!

I must say, these words are beautiful and would do any poem justice. I especially love ephemera...I will have to spend some time thinking about these plants and their names...Basically, for me in poetry, I like to use words that conjure up a feeling and a vision which can then explain an emotion as well. In this one poem I'm comparing young love and how quickly it can grow and then die to that of a plant that can grow and be beautiful but just as quickly die. (Hopefully I'll do that a little more poetically!) Thanks everyone! This has been so helpful!
