Root vegetables of all kinds need lots of water to plump up. What kind of onion did you plant?

If the potatoes were planted around march they ought to have tubers by now - when you dig them up are there any tiny tubers on the roots? Carrots and onions need good soil and carrots need it to be fine and not stony. They all need water if it doesn't rain much.
