thank you to all , i have had a look at the nicandra phsaloides, beatie. it,s different, the leaves are nothing like. my plant looks more like a fern.

Nemophila menziesii 'Penny Black'? Not much to do with Physalis, but it does have black flowers and ferny leaves.

I'm wondering why you thought it was physalis then - they're not fernlike either. Post a pic of the plant concerned...
