Still planted in the sandy soil it was given to me in, it seems to be doing ok. But would love to know what it is and how better to care for it.

It could be a type of orchid...The compost on top looks a bit manky. Carefully scrape off the top bits and replace with fresh compost. If it is an orchid it should be in orchid compost which is like bark pieces. Water with rainwater if possible.
