No, they don't go dormant during summer, unless they're suffering severe drought. Which Viburnum is it? Were there any other symptoms other than die back and is it still alive or completely dead?

Hi could it be the wind that has made it turn brown, mine also turned brown, so did my hydrageas, they dont usually go dormant, as once cut back, they produce growth for next years flowers, good luck.
