How do I dead head my petunias Do I pull off the dead petals or nip off the whole flower ?

A friend of mine told me to grab the seed pod and nip it out with your fingernails - seems to work and produces more flowers.

I use scissors and nip the top off as I finding nipping them off damages the stems and they are quite sticky.
