can I utilise the remnants of my bonfire around the garden.It has been in situ for many years and is mounting up out of control

I much depends on what sort of material that you burnt to begin with. If it was creosote-free wood or general garden waste it should be fine. All the postash would have been washed away by now but do not use on lime-haters as the ash may well contain calcium left after the burning process.
