I have a large box topiary bird growing in a terracotta pot. It is now so root-bound there is no soil left, but I cannot free it without breaking the pot. Do I dare cut away the over-spilling roots to put some compost in or just liquid feed it?

As it is just a plain terracotta pot, I'd sacrifice it and get the hammer out!! Has it escaped out the hole in the bottom of the pot? I'm surprised it doesn't keep falling over!!

Agree with Volunteer smash the pot and get it into a bigger one.

Unless the topiary is set with concrete in the pot, then the pit will come away - you may need a friend to pull it while you lift it. Appreciate that it looks a large and heavy pot and plant though!

I actually do not think the pot looks that small for the size of topiary on top. Even if repotting into a larger pot, I would gently remove about 10% of the roots to stimulate new growth and allow more soil in pot.

Oooh, harsh treatment for the pot. Now where's that hammer... Debrah
