I feed every week and dont let them go short of water, I also dead head nearly every day. In May I pinched out the growing tips to make them bushier if you do it now it will work but you will be without flowers for a while.

I would cut back half of the stems now, and half about three weeks from now. That should keep the blooms coming while the plant fattens up.
