i put french marigolds in my garden and something has eaten all the greenery including of the stem what could it be

Snails and/or slugs, I'm afraid. They love these plants. :-(

oh dont they just adore them. that would be my guess too.

And mine - I've stopped trying to grow them entirely cos of the slugs & snails.
