A heartfelt request to all newer members - when you join, can you please say what area of the UK you live in. It's very difficult to make a judgement about what might be wrong with your plants when there's no clue as to where you are - currently in the South, we're in drought, but from the Midlands upwards, they're not, its cooler and very damp, and that information is very important when trying to diagnose problems. Equally, if you want recommendations for plants, where you are is critical. So to those of you who haven't said where you are but have been members a little while, can you go back to your profile page and add the info in there. Thank you very much...

Hello Bamboo, hope you're keeping well. Funny you should request this, as I myself went back to my profile recently and altered it, as I had just put Wales and thought, Wales is a big place, so defined it slightly. As you say, we could be North or South of the country, which does make a difference. I live South Wales, and if you go far enough north, we border the likes of Liverpool, so there is a big difference. :o))

I'm okay thanks Lindalooloo - glad you realise how important it is, been driving me bonkers that most new members haven't put where they are, probably out of fears about privacy, not realising how critical it is. I'm not asking for the address, just the region, lol!

Hi sorry i think i might have come under this category but ive only been a member here for 30 minutes or so so i think i can be excused ;~)) have now updated profile accordingly

Thank you Lucyjordan, it will save us having to ask folk where they are in the country.

LOL! Not having a go Lucy, certainly not at you specifically, but I don't think its made clear enough when you join quite why its important to give that info. Welcome to GoY!

I tried to put SOUTH Wales but it would only allow me to put Wales, so I put West Glamorgan and hoped that would help. Swansea is part of the Gower Penninsula, so we are really South. Although we are Swansea Bay, the sea is actually part of the Bristol Channel. We are across the water from Devon. Summertime they have the old pleasure steamers taking you across to Ilfracombe, and we have the Swansea/Cork Ferry taking you back and forth Ireland during their Season. :o))

Ooops! Sorry Lucy. Welcome to GoY from me too. ;o))

Sounds like you live in a lovely spot, Lindalooloo, facing Devon.

I agree with you Bamboo I put my county on my profile when I joined.

On a very clear day, you can see the Devonshire coastline. Been meaning to message you regarding my Daughter, to tell you the 'medicine' you told her to try didn't work for her. She has been in and out of hospital since January. A day here and a day there, she's fed up. They gave her a date to be admitted last Monday the 9th, told her to be there for 7-30am. I dropped her off, came home to get little one ready and off to nursery, and on my way back from the school, my daughter phoned me telling me to pick her back up as the op had been cancelled. Apparently there were 21 patients being admitted at the same time, with only 5 beds available. The surgeon told my daughter, not only were they short of beds, but there were 2 surgeons each with a list and only one theatre available. She recieved a letter yesterday telling her to go in again next Thurs the26th at the same time, so hopefully they'll get her done this time.

That applies to the USA and many other places, too, Bamboo. Here in the States, we have all kinds of climates, from near tropical, to Mediterranean, to desert, to Alpine or tundra!

19 May, 2011

I know, tugbrethil, but the awful thing is, I wouldn't have much idea of the climate wherever someone said they were in the US, well, apart from one or two obvious areas.

19 May, 2011

True, but I or Delonix1 might have a good idea, adding at least two more brains to the mix!

21 May, 2011

I guess that's true - certainly my brain could do with some supplementation at times, lol!

I notice we now have at least one member who hasn't even told us where they live on the planet! I'm impressed that some of our members feel able to give plant advice...

22 May, 2011

I did contact Ajay/peter about this, because its common for people to just put UK or even now, 'satellite provider', but they didn't seem keen to change their sign up procedure to resolve this issue.

22 May, 2011

Hum... I will not try to answer a question unless I know where person is. I will ask where they are, if they don't respond tough.

I live in Manchester not bothered about people knowing where i live, it's just that it's not an option on the drop down options on my profile page. The county it comes under is Lancs.

22 May, 2011

Lancashire's good enough - its just the region really, there's a huge difference between, say, London and Lancashire in terms of temperature and general weather.

22 May, 2011

Though to be honest there is a big difference between inland and coastal Moray the weather in land is much more severe in winter.

22 May, 2011

Also Lancashire covers a wide area.North Lancs borders the Lake District, which is a different county altogether. I will update my profile to Lancs........By the way it doesn't always rain in Manchester !

22 May, 2011

Lol

22 May, 2011

Oh dear, I was definitely one of those ! I didn't even fill my profile in to begin with, I just asked a few questions - doh!!!!!! I have now put matters right and filled in my profile. I live in West Yorkshire, which is blustery wet and cold today ! Btw, thanks for all your advice up to press Bamboo :)

6 Oct, 2011

Well, I understand not filling in your profile to start with - you just want info when you first join, probably, not to tell the world who you are. But knowing where you are is important - I find it annoying that the site doesn't insist on it when people join.

How do I say thanks?
