Clematis problem

Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

I have a clematis (dont know variety as it was in garden when I moved in). However, the last two years I have pruned back to about a metre and got really good blooms. This year I left one bit of old wood at about 2 metres in length as to go over and archway. I was getting lots of new shoots on the old wood and the flower heads were gradually developing but within about 4/5 days all the new shoots/buds died off. The remaining stems and shoots are all really healthy and flourishing. I checked all along the stem that died and there is no sign of damage. How can it be that just one stem has died? I am assuming that my best course of action is cut the dead stem completely out?
I would post a picture but I am at work on nights!
Regards

i think it could be an infection got in to ur clematis and killed off a stem i would say cut it off its dead and will encourage regrowth.
