Does chlorine in tap water do any harm to plants grown on patio? I am deliberating about whether to buy a hose water filter. They cost about £50, which is a lot of money to me as I am poor. Advice appreciated.

Let the water stand in your container for 24 hours and the chlorine will have evaporated Jonathan. Oh and the filter is available on Amazon and a couple of other sites for £40 (exactly the same thing is available in the use for for $40!)

I wouldn't bother, Jonathan, seems like a lot of money when actually, the chlorine doesn't seem to bother most plants anyway, I use it all the time on my balcony straight from the tap - I'm reliably informed that letting water stand for only an hour means the bulk of the chlorine will have dissipated, if you want to do that. I'm not even sure that plants take up the chlorine anyway, Seaburngirl would know whether they do or not. A bigger concern would be the alkalinity in areas with hard water - not good on acid loving contained plants.

I'm not able to manage more than the smallest of watering cans, due to the severity of my disability. I mostly use a hose directly. I had wondered whether the soil in tubs in long term plantings would be affected. But what you say sounds encouraging. I'll be glad to save the money. You have to replace the filters every year as well.

I'm sure tap water is fine Jonathan, provided they're not acid lovers and you have hard water.

I don't know what the water is like where I am, hard or soft. I certainly don't drink it without filtering in a jug. I have no acid lovers.

I live in an EXTREMELY hard water area and there's no ill effects on any of the plants here, on the contrary infact.

Jonathan - the water here in Bracknell is quite hard but if you are not growing any acid lovers, that will not be an issue

I can say from experience that Tibouchina doesn't like tap water.
