On consideration, it really depends on what's in the old lawn. If it's rampant clover or other such weeds, then yes, I do think you'd be wasting your time and money. I suppose if it's just bare patches and thin grass, it might be worth a try but I wouldn't really do this myself as there must be something amiss with your old lawn for you to ask a question! Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear. I don't think there's a quick and easy solution - start again..
