My Cornus controversa tree is now about 12' tall (4m) and a lovely shape but too big for its allotted space (yes, I know...). It is the non-variegated form (mmm...) and I have cut it back before but now (Jan) it needs some really tough love. How do I keep the shape and prevent it throwing up 'poles'?

If you keep a close eye on the cut surfaces you could rub out any unwanted potential shoots before they start to grow. It will probably be an ongoing project to maintain a good shape.

Thanks! Prompt responses and helpful answers. I have had to rub out a few nosy sideshoots in the past.

How do I say thanks?
