Hi
Ive just got a new selection of plug plants and they recommend potting them up with a mixture containing some fertilizer. Ive got some fish blood and bone will that do?
The plants are small plugs going into 9cm pots:
Fuchsias
Spray chrysanths
Lobelia vedrarensis
Salvia Rose Queen
Erysium

They say on the box unsuitable for some plants, then dont mention which ones!

Help!

If you're using new potting compost to pot them up, that'll have fertilizer already in it, so you don't need to add anything to it. And I wouldn't use fish blood and bone anyway - better off with something like liquid growmore, but I wouldn't use that either at this time of year.

You'll also need to be very careful you don't lose them if you put them out at this time of year.

Thanks Bamboo, I did think it was a bit early but hey they said it..what do I know? But you have eased my mind. I will pot on with JI No.2 and grit and vermiculite. However, Im still in a puzzle as to what plants, apart from rhodos/camellias you might not want to feed fish blood and bone??

Hope your John Innes is new! Naughty of them to say not suitable for all plants and then not tell you which ones it's not suitable for - I've no idea I'm afraid. Not something I ever use in pots, but use lots in the ground.

Think I didnt write clearly Bamboo..it was on the box of fertilizer it said not suitable for some plants.

If you use it in the ground, do you avoid any particular plants or use it on everything?

All I can imagine is not to use it for the acid soil lovers, as it'll be too high in nutrient levels, and not suited to their likes. Other than them, can't think of anything that won't appreciate it - in the growing season. Worthy

Basically B.F and B. should not be used on anything which dislike lime. Nor should Bonemeal too.

Hi Tetra, just seen this. I always grow any plug plant on in the original pot it came in, frost free of course. When ALL danger of frost has gone I pot them on with a mix of ordinary multi-purpose and a handfull of vitax Q4 granules. This stuff is used by commercial growers and is now avaliable from good GC's. Its quite expensive, but will last a long time. One little lot in a pot or whatever last all season, you don't have to worry about feeding at all. I swear by it.

Then I will look out for it Littlelegs. Unfortunately they didnt come in pots so had to pot them into 9cm pots pretty quick, but when they have put on a bit more growth will get some VQ4 and repot. After the frost of course and as the birdbath is freezing up again that will be a while! Ta!
