Can anyone tell me what this plant is called please. It looks like a Christmas cactus, but is different to all others I have seen. Almost a double.

Hello Cinders long time no speak. How are you keeping?

I cant name it but hopefully Hywel will see it and get in touch.

Hi Eileen, thank you, I’m asking for a friend.
Yes I’m keeping quite well really, just getting old !!? You may have heard that I have moved to a small flat in southampton now, mainly to be nearer family, but I am allowed to do some gardening here in the communal garden, which I am enjoying as it was rather neglected ! So I have been rather busy trying to get a few things in to give some colour.
I often keep an eye on you all on here, but not taking part.
Love to all. xx

Well now, fancy I decided to look in here today, after not doing so for a while, isn't that strange ...
Hi Cinderella, I'm glad you're keeping well and it's nice to hear from you :)
The plant is Hatiora rosea, an epiphytic cactus native to forests of southern Brazil. It is very rare in the wild and only found in a few locations.

Hello Hywel, thank you so much, and lovely to hear from you too. It’s a very pretty flower on this plant isn’t it.
I hope you are keeping well too. I have been watching all the work you have had done, it’s looking very good, All the best for the summer.

Ha ha, he is amazing isn’t he. Lovely to hear from him.
I’ve passed the information on…
Sounds like you have been really busy in the last few months Eileen, bet it seems strange to be only you two.
I am seeing a lot more of my two girls now, and their families, so I’m really enjoying it. Giving me a new lease of life. x

I've never been called 'amazing' before lol ... and it's nice to know Eileen had confidence that I'd know the answer.
Glad you're enjoying life in your new home Cinderella and I'm sure your family are pleased to have you near them as well.

Whats the difference between that one and a Rhipsalidopsis?(cos that's what I though it was so good job you were here!) I have a scarlet one out here.

12 May, 2023

They are exactly the same Steragram. It's just the name has been changed - Rhipsalidopsis is now called Hatiora.

Thank you Hywel. I feel better for that! I do wish they would stop all this name changing. I still can't remember the new name for Dicentra. I'll have to make a label for the Hatiora. Does it keep the spectabilis bit?

14 May, 2023

It is Hatiora rosea Steragram, the 'rosea' bit stays the same.
There is also Hatiora gaertneri which is the Easter cactus.

I also wish they didn't change the names but it's something to do with new discoveries in the plant's DNA.
