I'm just wondering it could be when I'm putting in a photo so I'll just ask a question. Would it be OK to remove the lower branches of my Maple tree and if so when is the best time. Thanks

Don't do it when the sap is moving through the tree, they can bleed to death if pruned at the wrong time. So very early spring or later autumn is the best time.

yes you can do this. its a technique called lifting the crown or lifting its skirts.
i would suggest when it is dormant, ie during the winter.
